Second School 'Intercom’ Is Installed By Kiwanis Group
|

A FELLA'S GOT TO GO TO SCHOOL - And that is what Dwight Waddle is
fixing to do above as he studies a two-way intercommunications sound
box through which he keeps in touch with his classroom. With him are,
from left, Joseph Hoopes, Walter Ratcliff and William Raisch, Kiwanians
who made the installation.

Dwight Waddle has not been, able to attend school this fall while he is
recuperating from a polio attack last summer. But Dwight has stayed
close to the classroom and his classmates anyway through a two-way
communication system.
The "intercom" system consists of a direct telephone line from Dwight's
room to his classroom at school. On his desk and his teacher's desk are
sound units which transmit and receive classroom sounds and Dwight's
voice as he takes part in classroom discussions.
A son of Mr. and Mrs. Doyle Waddle, Dwight is 15 years old and he a
sophomore. He spends approximately five hours a day "going to school at
home".
The two-way communication, popularly known as "intercom", was installed
by a Monroe Kiwanis Club committee. The installation was in cooperation
with the local school administration, the local telephone company and
the state department of public instruction.
Special equipment needed was provided by the state department.
Mr. and Mrs. Waddle report that the system is not only helping Dwight
keep up with his school work but is helping keep up his morale during
long months at home.
He expects to be able to return to school by the second semester.
Mary Brong, daughter of Rev. and Mrs. Donald Brong is also using the intercom system.
Parents of both children are very pleased with the fine stimulus the system provides.
